Abstract

We the humans have the basic nature to know the things that happened around our surroundings. Vayanasalas fulfill this eagerness to a great extent. This article examines the relevance of Vayanasalas in enquiring, recording and thereby preserving the local history and culture of a region. It concentrates on the activities of public libraries/reading rooms in the villages of Kasaragod district in northern Kerala and it analyses how effectively they introduce the innovative step of preserving local history and culture to develop their knowledge and social consciousness about the past.
