Author Guidelines

Guidance for authors on authorship, submission, research integrity, manuscript preparation and publication procedures.

Authors submitting manuscripts to Kerala History and Studies Journal should ensure that their work meets the journal's academic, ethical and editorial requirements. These guidelines should be read together with the journal's Submission Guidelines, Manuscript Preparation instructions and relevant publication policies.

1. Before Submitting

Authors should ensure that the manuscript falls within the aims and scope of the journal and presents original scholarly research. The manuscript should be prepared carefully and checked for accuracy, consistency, language and references before submission.

Authors should also ensure that the manuscript is not simultaneously under consideration by another journal.

2. Originality

Manuscripts submitted to the journal must represent original work. Authors should not submit material that has already been published in substantially the same form elsewhere.

Where a manuscript is based on material previously presented, published or disseminated, authors should provide the relevant information to the editorial office.

3. Authorship

Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made a meaningful scholarly contribution to the research and preparation of the manuscript.

All listed authors should have approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to its submission for publication.

Individuals who have assisted the research without meeting the requirements for authorship may be acknowledged appropriately.

4. Corresponding Author

One author should normally be identified as the corresponding author for communication with the editorial office.

The corresponding author should provide accurate contact information and should remain available to respond to editorial queries during the submission and review process.

5. Changes in Authorship

Requests to add, remove or change the order of authors after submission should be communicated to the editorial office with an explanation and the agreement of the affected authors.

Authors should finalise the authorship information carefully before submission to avoid unnecessary changes during the editorial process.

6. Institutional Affiliation

Authors should provide their current institutional affiliation accurately. The department, institution and country should be stated where applicable.

Where the research was undertaken at an institution different from the author's current affiliation, the relevant information may be stated appropriately in the manuscript.

7. ORCID

Authors are encouraged to provide their ORCID identifier where available. ORCID helps distinguish researchers with similar names and supports accurate attribution of scholarly work.

8. Manuscript Structure

Authors should organise the manuscript in a logical sequence appropriate to the subject and research method.

A research article may normally contain the following elements:

  • Title
  • Author names and affiliations
  • Abstract
  • Keywords
  • Introduction
  • Research objectives or questions
  • Sources and methodology
  • Main discussion and analysis
  • Conclusion
  • Acknowledgements, where applicable
  • References

The structure may vary according to the nature of the research.

9. Title, Abstract and Keywords

The title should accurately represent the subject of the article. The abstract should provide a concise account of the research, including its principal subject, objective, approach and main findings.

Keywords should represent the principal themes, subjects, geographical areas, periods or concepts discussed in the article.

10. Sources and Evidence

Authors should clearly identify the sources used in their research. Historical studies may draw upon archival records, manuscripts, inscriptions, archaeological evidence, oral sources, published documents, material culture, interviews and other appropriate evidence.

Sources should be used responsibly and their limitations should be recognised where relevant.

11. Citations and References

All sources referred to in the manuscript should be properly acknowledged. Citations and references should be accurate and consistent throughout the article.

Authors should check that every source cited in the text is represented correctly in the reference list and that bibliographical details are complete.

12. Quotations and Translations

Direct quotations should reproduce the original source accurately and should be accompanied by appropriate references.

Where material is translated from another language, authors should indicate this where necessary and should provide the original wording where it is relevant to the scholarly discussion.

13. Tables and Illustrations

Tables, figures, maps and photographs should be used where they contribute to the article. Each should be appropriately numbered, captioned and referred to in the main text.

Sources should be acknowledged, and authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material where permission is required.

14. Language and Proofreading

Manuscripts should be written in clear academic English and should be carefully proofread before submission.

Authors should check spelling, grammar, punctuation, terminology, transliteration and references throughout the manuscript.

15. Plagiarism

Authors must ensure that all ideas, words, data and other material derived from other sources are appropriately acknowledged.

The journal may screen submitted manuscripts for plagiarism or inappropriate textual overlap. Further information is available in the journal's Plagiarism Policy .

16. Research Integrity

Authors are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the research presented in their manuscripts. Fabrication, falsification, plagiarism and deliberate misrepresentation of evidence are not acceptable.

Authors should maintain appropriate records of their research materials and sources and should be able to explain the basis of their findings where required.

17. Ethical Considerations

Where research involves interviews, oral histories, personal information or other forms of human participation, authors should follow the ethical requirements applicable to their research and institution.

Any necessary permissions, consent or ethical approvals should be obtained before the research is submitted for publication.

18. Conflict of Interest

Authors should disclose any financial, professional, personal or institutional relationship that could reasonably be considered relevant to the research or its publication.

19. Funding

Where the research has received financial or institutional support, authors should provide appropriate information concerning the funding or support.

20. Acknowledgements

Authors may acknowledge individuals, institutions, libraries, archives, research projects or other forms of assistance that contributed to the research but do not qualify for authorship.

21. Submission and Peer Review

Once submitted, manuscripts are subject to editorial assessment. Manuscripts that meet the journal's basic requirements may proceed to peer review according to the journal's review procedure.

Authors should respond carefully and professionally to editorial and reviewer comments where revisions are requested.

Details are available on the Peer Review Process page.

22. Revised Manuscripts

Where revisions are requested, authors should submit the revised manuscript within the period communicated by the editorial office.

A response explaining how the reviewer and editorial comments have been addressed may be requested as part of the revision process.

23. Publication

Acceptance of a manuscript is subject to the journal's editorial procedures. Accepted manuscripts may undergo editorial preparation and proofreading before publication.

Authors should review proofs carefully when they are provided and should communicate any necessary corrections within the specified period.

24. Copyright and Licensing

Post-publication corrections, expressions of concern and retractions are handled according to the journal's relevant editorial policies.
