JOURNAL POLICY

Copyright

Copyright, author rights and the conditions governing the use of articles published by Kerala History and Studies Journal.

Kerala History and Studies Journal recognises the intellectual rights of authors and seeks to maintain clear arrangements concerning copyright and the use of published scholarly work. Authors should read this policy before submitting a manuscript.

1. Copyright Ownership

Unless otherwise agreed in writing, copyright in an article remains with the author or authors, subject to the rights granted to the journal for publication, distribution and preservation of the article.

Where a manuscript is submitted by more than one author, the authors are responsible for agreeing among themselves on the ownership and use of the work before submission.

2. Author Rights

Authors retain the right to use their own published work for legitimate scholarly, educational and research purposes, subject to applicable copyright law and any specific agreement entered into with the journal.

Authors may refer to their published article in academic work, teaching materials, research presentations and other scholarly activities, provided that appropriate acknowledgement of the original publication is given.

3. Licence for Publication

By submitting a manuscript for publication, authors grant the journal the necessary non-exclusive rights to publish, reproduce, distribute, preserve and make the accepted article available through the journal's website and associated scholarly services.

This permission does not by itself transfer ownership of the author's copyright unless a separate written agreement expressly provides for such a transfer.

4. Publication and Distribution

Once an article is published, the journal may make the article available through its website, archive and other legitimate channels used for scholarly dissemination.

The journal may also preserve bibliographic and article information in appropriate indexing, abstracting and scholarly discovery services.

5. Author's Accepted Manuscript

Authors wishing to deposit an accepted manuscript in an institutional repository, subject repository or other scholarly archive should ensure that the deposit complies with any applicable copyright agreement and repository requirements.

6. Published Version

The final published version of an article should be cited using the journal's official bibliographic information.

Where the article has a DOI, authors and readers are encouraged to use the DOI when referring to the published version.

7. Citation and Acknowledgement

Any reuse of material from an article should include appropriate acknowledgement of the original author and publication.

A proper citation should normally include the author or authors, article title, journal title, volume, issue, year, page information where applicable, and DOI where available.

8. Third-Party Material

Authors are responsible for identifying material in their manuscripts that is owned by third parties.

Where permission is required for the reproduction of photographs, maps, illustrations, tables, archival material or other copyrighted content, authors should obtain the necessary permission before publication.

The journal is not responsible for unauthorised use of third-party material supplied by an author.

9. Quotations and Short Extracts

Authors may use quotations and other source material in accordance with applicable copyright law and accepted scholarly practice.

Quotations should be clearly identified and accompanied by an appropriate citation to the original source.

10. Images, Maps and Illustrations

Authors submitting photographs, maps, charts, illustrations or other visual material should ensure that they have the necessary rights or permissions to publish that material.

Where an image or illustration has been obtained from an archive, museum, library, repository or other institution, authors should follow the institution's stated conditions of use.

11. Government and Archival Material

Historical and archival sources may be subject to different legal conditions depending on their origin, date, repository and jurisdiction.

Authors should verify the conditions applicable to material reproduced in their articles and obtain permission where required.

12. Translation and Adaptation

Authors should obtain appropriate permission when translating, adapting or reproducing copyrighted material that is not their own.

Where an article contains a translation prepared by the author, the original source should be identified clearly.

13. Reuse by Readers and Researchers

Readers and researchers may refer to, cite and use published articles in accordance with applicable copyright law and accepted scholarly practice.

Reproduction of substantial portions of a published article, republication or commercial reuse may require permission from the relevant copyright holder.

14. Commercial Reuse

Any proposed commercial reproduction or substantial redistribution of published material should be undertaken only where the appropriate rights or permissions have been obtained.

15. Requests Concerning Copyright

Questions concerning copyright, reproduction, permissions or the use of published material may be directed to the editorial office.

Requests should identify the article or material concerned and explain the proposed use.

16. Copyright Infringement

Concerns regarding possible unauthorised reproduction or use of material published by the journal may be reported to the editorial office.

The journal may review the information provided and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable law and its editorial procedures.

17. Author Responsibility

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their submissions do not knowingly infringe the copyright or other intellectual property rights of another person or organisation.

Authors should also ensure that all necessary permissions have been obtained before submitting material requiring third-party authorisation.

18. Copyright and Ethical Publication

Copyright compliance forms part of responsible scholarly publication. Authors should distinguish clearly between their own work and material obtained from other sources.

Any suspected misuse of copyrighted material may be considered under the journal's publication ethics and research integrity procedures.

19. Relationship with Other Policies

This Copyright Policy should be read together with the journal's other policies, particularly those concerning publication ethics, plagiarism, open access and retraction.
