Marriage Feasts and Brahmanical Rituality: A Historical Study of Namboothiri Traditions in Kerala

Abstract

The matrimony or wedding is one of the most important religious, social and cultural practices for almost all nations in the world. It involved processes and bringing a number of meanings that are significant to human society, culture and relationships. The rites and rituals observed on the day of wedding play a very significant role in the marriage. In the customs of upper caste communities, especially among the Namboothiris of Malabar, there can be seen a number of ritual rites in connection with marriage. Normally the marriage takes place in brides illam. In the early period, the women had no right to select her counterpart.
