Symbolism and the Sacred Feminine: Cultural Expressions of the Mother Goddess

Abstract

The picture of Mother Goddess portrayed in the murals, the kalams, and in the folk performances are undoubtedly the religious symbols which the believer carries in his psyche. They are born out of man’s experience, and have the capacity to speak to man of many things. The Bhagavathi is generally represented in red, the symbol of life blood; The folk performances in general are observed at night in the midst of vibrant music and colour which instills a sense of fear and awe in the observer. It reminds the believer that he should live a life of righteousness or else he would be punished.
