Anganwadi is a government sponsored child care and mother-care development programme at the village level in India. It caters to children in the 0-6 age group. It was started by the Indian government in 1975 as part of the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) programme to combat child hunger and malnutrition. An Anganwadi Centre provides basic health care facilities in Villages. It is a part of the public health care system. Basic healthcare activities include contraceptive counseling and supply nutrition, education and supplementation, as well as pre-school activities. The centres may also be used as depots for oral rehydration salts, basic medicines, contraceptives and childcare.
